I’ve been saying for a long time that the left’s totalitarian stance on guns and gun control has absolutely nothing to do with a desire to keep people safe. The rationale behind their advocacy for gun control is more about the control than the gun. They don’t have a fundamental aversion to guns, because if they did, none of their security details would carry them. No, they don’t mind guns at all. The truth is, they like guns. They just don’t like the idea of people like you and me owning them, thereby having the ability to protect ourselves. The situation in Virginia is illustrative of this.
Virginia’s government, the house of delegates, state senate, and of course the governor’s mansion are all controlled by leftists. When the legislative session begins later this month, several draconian gun laws are expected to pass and get signed in to law by Governor Northam. In response to the 115 counties, cities and towns that have declared themselves second amendment sanctuaries, Representative Don McEachin suggested calling out the National Guard to enforce these laws. Attorney General Mark Herring has stated that these laws “will be enforced”. Governor Blackface has also introduced a budget bill that includes an increase of a quarter of a million dollars for “increase in the operating cost of adult correctional facilities resulting from the enactment of sentencing legislation” for violations of these new gun control measures. If this was really about safety, they would focus on finding actual solutions for reducing gun violence. They would focus on curbing the recidivism rate of violent offenders and they would look for ways to reduce the suicide rate. What they would not be doing is passing laws that turn thousands of law-abiding gun owners into felons with the stroke of a pen.
When Governor Abbott in Texas signed a bill into law allowing people to carry weapons into places of worship – we’ll leave aside the notion that a law had to be signed to allow people to exercise their constitutional rights for now – he enabled Jack Wilson and his security team to have the means to neutralize the threat at the West Freeway Church of Christ. At the time, Abbot signed the bill, Joe Biden said that it was irrational to allow people to carry weapons in church. Leftists like him believe that being able to protect oneself and one’s family with a firearm is unnecessary. They see the desire to have that ability as “irrational”.
There were over two hundred people in the congregation at the church in White Settlement, Texas when the gunman opened fire. He was armed with a shotgun and details about that weapon are not yet available at the time of this writing. Based on what we know of him, however, he was likely not very proficient at reloading, so I’m going to guess that he could have been subdued before he was able to wipe out the entire congregation. The left would rather have seen that happen than have the deacon of security neutralize the threat. The average police response time is between 8 and 10 minutes, depending on which study you look at. We have all seen the carnage that can occur in a fraction of that time. If you live in a rural area the response time could be three times the average. This threat was neutralized in six seconds. A 911 call lasts longer than that.
Leftists do not believe in the right to self-protection. Robert Francis O’Rourke said that the second amendment was not written to codify our right to protect ourselves against a tyrannical government. There is only one explanation for holding such positions: They are the tyrannical government and they don’t want the hoi polloi to have the means to rise against them. I know Biden and Robert Francis don’t hold an elected office anymore, but their positions are not unique. The left is now openly admitting that they want to disarm us.
The left’s anti-gun agenda is not about safety. Their agenda can only be interpreted as a means of controlling us. With an unarmed citizenry, the left is free to enact any totalitarian policy they see fit. An unarmed citizenry is at the mercy of those who have the guns, whether that is the government imposing more and more restrictions or the criminals who wish to do them harm. Neither element can afford to give us those six seconds.
