Trooper Joseph Gallagher of the New York State Police succumbed to injuries he sustained on December 18th, 2017, when he was struck by a vehicle.
Trooper Gallagher was assisting a motorist when a passing motorist who was distracted by three texting conversations, struck him.
The driver of the vehicle that struck Trooper Gallagher was arrested and charged with third-degree assault with criminal negligence, which is a misdemeanor. He was sentenced to 30 days time served, three years of probation, and 1,000 hours of community service.
Trooper Gallagher served with the New York State Police for seven years. He is survived by his wife and two children.
